VASTA is pleased to be able to support the Clyde Vinson Memorial Scholarship which provides support to pre-career or very early career voice/speech trainers. (A candidate must either be currently engaged in preparatory work as a voice/speech trainer, or have less than three years employment experience as a voice/speech trainer.)
Clyde Vinson taught for more than thirty years, both in universities and privately in New York City. He received his Ph.D. from Northwestern University and spent two years with The Working Theatre. He organized the Court Theatre in Detroit, Michigan and directed there for three years. Clyde was on the faculty of Wayne State University and the University of Utah in Salt Lake City. He worked at the Circle Repertory Theatre in New York City and eventually opened his own Studio there. When the Royal Shakespeare Company came to Broadway, Clyde worked with the company, and when Derek Jacobi won his Tony Award he thanked Clyde in his acceptance speech. Clyde wished it to be known that his death resulted from AIDS. He is survived by his family in Texas, and by loving friends and students in New York City, and in theatres everywhere.
The recipient will be awarded the following: one year free VASTA membership, waiver of conference fee, reimbursement up to $500 for travel funds to attend annual conference,
a $2,500 award.
To apply for this award, applicants should have the following documentation prepared: condensed 2-page CV, highlighting your career-to-date (.pdf format); 1-2 page statement of teaching philosophy and career goals; 1-2 page letter of nomination from a current VASTA member (.pdf format)
Nomination letters, no more than two pages in length, should be an in depth account of how the nominator knows the candidate and why they believe the candidate will make an exemplary voice and/or speech trainer.
Please complete the form by the extended deadline: March 20th. Winners will be confirmed by March 30th.
How do we define our roles as Dialect Designers or Dialect Coaches, Voice Coaches, Vocal Directors, and Text-and-Speech Coaches in the rehearsal room and coaching sessions? What do directors see as our role(s)? How can we acknowledge the roles of others in the creative team, avoid “stepping on toes” and contribute effectively to an actor’s or cast’s performance. Sara Becker, Ben Furey, Gurkiran Kaur and Ursula Meyer are our panelists. The event is moderated by Adrianne Moore
