Washington, D.C. currently stands at a complex crossroads of institutional and cultural shift. As our nation’s capital navigates these challenging times, the VASTA community recognizes that solidarity and the human voice are our most powerful tools for resilience. We gather not only to practice our trade, but to hold the light for one another and for the working artists of the District.
Hosted by the Studio Acting Conservatory in partnership with Songs of the Goat, this mini-conference explores the vital intersection of Greek tragedy and Brechtian political theatre. Just as Brecht looked to the past to comment on his present, we will use our time in D.C. to examine how historical narratives—from the ancient chorus to the signing of the Declaration of Independence in 1776—inform our current reality. We gather to interrogate the role of the artist in "dark times," using our collective voice to disrupt silence and demand a clearer vision of the future.
Performance at Ford’s Theatre: In a moment of deep reflection on our national narrative, registration includes a ticket to the evening performance of 1776 at the historic Ford’s Theatre on April 11. This shared experience will serve as a centerpiece for our weekend’s dialogue on voice, history, and the artist's role in society.
