13-20 August 2021
Led by Margaret PIKES (a founder member of the RHT) and Neil PARIS (performer, dancer and teacher), this workshop is open to participants interested in the Wolfsohn - Hart approach to developing the range of vocal expression and who already have some experience of voice and body work and improvisation.
The workshop will take place at the L’Hameau de l’Etoile in the studios: “Salle Cayla” and “La Petite Bergerie”
MARGARET PIKES (UK/FRANCE/GERMANY) is a founding member of the Roy Hart Theatre who has been a teacher of the Roy Hart approach to vocal expression internationally for more than 40 years including as a voice teacher at the Conservatories (Dramatic Art) of Liege and Brussels and more recently as voice coach for the Fabulous Beast Dance Theatre. After participating in most of the early Roy Hart Theatre productions, Margaret continued as a professional singer of many genres from jazz to chanson française. She was the soloist in the oratorio 'Canto General' (M. Theodorakis and P. Neruda) and sang (with Petros Pandis,) for the Premier of this work in the USA. She lived and worked for 6 years in Togo, West Africa, singing regularly there with the jazz trio Anima. In 2011/12 she was invited to perform and tour in “Agnes and Walter: A Little Love Story” – a dance theatre production directed by Neil Smith.
Her book "Owing our voices: Vocal Discovery in the Wolfsohn Hart Tradition" written in collaboration with Dr Patrick Campbell was published by Routledge in January this year.
NEIL PARIS (UK) is a director, performer and teacher.
From 2003-2010 he toured internationally with Fabulous Beast Dance Theatre, where he met Margaret Pikes and led company classes and vocal development. He has taught throughout the UK and Europe and has been working with Margaret Pikes since 2005. In this work Neil uses dance, theatre and yoga practices to explore imaginative ways of making connections and pathways through the body to the voice. He combines playful exercises designed to free the body and spark the imagination with disciplined quiet practices that connect us with our breathing and our own unique interior worlds.
