EduCore and the EDIA+ Committee are excited to partner with Michelle Lopez-Rios for the event, “How to Have Difficult Conversations: Workshop on Addressing Microaggressions in the Voice and Speech Classroom”. This event will explore how to navigate discussions around microaggressions, culturally sensitive situations, etc. in the classroom and academic institution in general with specificity and care. If you have found yourself in circumstances where conflict or harm has come up with students and/or colleagues and you didn’t know how to best address it, this event is for you. This workshop will offer practical solutions for members to implement in their learning spaces when navigating difficult conversations.

Michelle Lopez-Rios is a teatrista, teacher and activist. She joined VASTA in 2000 and has served as Chair of the Diversity Committee (2012-2015) and as a Board Member (2015-2018). She is a co-founder of the Royal Mexican Players with Alvaro Saar Rios and together they have offered workshops, devised community productions, and produced original works around the U.S. for almost twenty years. Michelle directs around the country often focusing on Theatre for Young Audiences. She was honored to devise and direct a live multimedia performance of 371 Productions’ Precious Lives, the popular weekly podcast about gun violence and young people in Milwaukee. She has served as a voice & dialect coach on over 60 productions. Favorites include: Mojada & Julius Caesar (Oregon Shakespeare Festival); The Brothers Size & Talking Heads (Milwaukee Chamber Theatre) Clyde’s & Measure for Measure (Goodman Theatre); Familiar (Steppenwolf); and Othello & Macbeth (Houston Shakespeare Festival). She is an Associate Teacher of Fitzmaurice Voicework and lives in Chicago, IL where she is an Associate Professor of Voice and Speech and Artistic Director of Chicago Playworks at The Theatre School at DePaul University.

We hope to see you there!
